Anita’s Story
From Chronic Pain and Exhaustion to Stronger, Pain-Free Movement
General Client | 18 Months at HPC
“I have tried it all, and nothing worked. Then I found HPC.”
Anita Jacobs came to The Human Performance Centre after years of frustration with her body, her energy, and her relationship with exercise.
She did not arrive as someone who loved training. She arrived hesitant, tired, physically uncomfortable, and unsure whether anything would work. Like many people who eventually find HPC, she had already tried several approaches before. Exercise programmes. Diets. Short-term fixes. Nothing had lasted.
What she needed was not another generic programme.
She needed a proper assessment, a structured process, and coaching that took her body, her history, her work demands, and her lifestyle seriously.
Client Background
Anita is a business owner who runs her own manual business producing handcrafted wool goods. Her work requires long hours in repetitive postural positions, placing sustained load on her upper back, hips, lower back, and lower body throughout the day.
She was referred to HPC by an existing client who had trained with us for several years. When she reached out, there was hesitation. But there was also a real need for change.
She had been living with ongoing fatigue, physical discomfort, and a deep dislike of exercise shaped by previous experiences that had either pushed too hard, failed to meet her where she was, or simply did not suit her body.
By the time Anita started at HPC, her body was carrying the cost of years of pain, poor movement, low energy, and inconsistent support.
The Challenge
Anita did not need to be pushed harder. She needed to be understood properly.
Her work placed repeated physical stress on her body. Her posture, lower back, hips, feet, and legs were taking the brunt of that stress. She was also managing long-standing health challenges that affected her energy, sleep, recovery, and daily capacity.
Previous approaches had not created lasting change. They were either too generic, too aggressive, or too difficult to sustain. Instead of helping her build confidence in her body, they reinforced the belief that exercise was uncomfortable, unpleasant, and not for her.
At HPC, the goal was not to force her into another training routine.
The goal was to rebuild trust in her body through the right assessment, the right exercise selection, the right progression, and a standard she could sustain.

The HPC approach
Every HPC programme begins with an in-depth consultation and assessment across our Four Pillars: Sleep, Hydration, Nutrition, and Training.
For Anita, the assessment gave us the full picture. Her body was not failing because she lacked motivation. It was struggling because her training, recovery, nutrition, work demands, movement patterns, and lifestyle needed to be understood together. This assessment revealed the following: chronic iron deficiency, poor sleep quality, a body under constant physical stress from work, and movement patterns that were causing pain rather than preventing it.
That is where the process started.
TRaining
Anita started with three sessions per week, capped at 60 minutes per session to suit the demands of running a growing business.
The training was deliberate from the beginning.
No unnecessary intensity, no ego. Her programme was built around what her body needed most: improved hip mechanics, lower back stability, posterior-chain strength, and rotational movement patterns that supported the physical demands of her work.
During the assessment and early training phase, we identified movement patterns that were contributing to discomfort. For example, when training lower-body movements such as lunges and loaded squats, Anita’s heels were lifting, and her knees were taking strain. Instead of forcing the movement, we adjusted the setup and used specialised wedges to help her train more effectively and reduce unnecessary stress.
Her programme also exposed her body to all planes of movement: forward and backward, side to side, and rotational patterns. This helped her body move with more control, more strength, and less restriction. Her body was feeling the relief it needed all along.
Progress was built incrementally. Instead of chasing intensity for the sake of it, we used small, measurable improvements in reps, sets, and load, including micro plates where appropriate. This allowed Anita to keep progressing safely without overwhelming her body.
Over time, her training evolved to include a wider range of unilateral and bilateral strength work, giving her body the capacity to move better, feel stronger, and handle daily life with less pain.
Nutrition
Anita’s nutrition approach was built around her preferences, her lifestyle, and what her body needed to support long-term progress.
The goal was never rapid weight loss.
The goal was to support lean muscle, improve energy, create structure, and build a sustainable environment for gradual fat loss. For Anita, this mattered because the process needed to support her body, not punish it.
At HPC, nutrition is not treated as a short-term diet. It is part of the foundation.
Training creates the demand. Nutrition helps the body adapt.
Sleep & Recovery
Sleep and recovery were also part of the process.
We worked on helping Anita create a more consistent sleep routine and identify the factors that were interfering with her ability to recover well. As her body became stronger, her pain reduced, and her daily habits improved, she reported better sleep, better energy, and a stronger sense of physical capacity.
The focus was not on one isolated intervention.
It was on building a stronger foundation across the pillars that affect how the body performs and recovers.
Mindset
One of the biggest changes was Anita’s relationship with exercise. She arrived with a genuine dislike of training. That did not change because we tried to motivate her with slogans. It changed because her body started giving her different feedback.
Training no longer had to mean pain. Progress no longer had to mean punishment. Consistency no longer had to depend on extreme motivation.
As Anita started moving better, feeling better, and understanding her body more clearly, her confidence changed. Within weeks, the woman who had always hated exercise was showing up ready to work. Because long-term progress is not built on intensity alone. It is built on trust, consistency, and the right process.

Eighteen months later, Anita Jacobs is a different person. Physically, yes, but more importantly, she experiences her body differently.
She is leaner, stronger, more confident in how she moves, and healthier across every marker that matters. She has lost 10 kg, but the number on the scale is only a small part of the story.
Her posture and movement quality have improved. She reports better energy, better sleep, and a stronger sense of health and control in her body. The physical demands of running her business no longer affect her in the same way they once did. Her iron levels have significantly improved, and her reliance on supplements and medication — including sleep medication — has reduced by huge margins. The chronic pain that defined her daily life is gone.
Most tellingly, Anita now looks forward to training. That is the real result. Not just weight lost, reduced pain, or just the strength gained. A complete shift in how she sees her body, her health, and what training can do when it is coached properly.
Physical results
10 kg weight loss
Improved posture and movement quality
Reduced daily pain in her feet, legs, and lower body
Improved strength and physical capacity
Better energy and recovery
Greater confidence in movement
Improved ability to handle the physical demands of her work
Mindset & Lifestyle results
Anita’s relationship with exercise changed completely.
She moved from avoidance and hesitation to enjoyment, consistency, and trust in the process. She now understands her body better, participates actively in her long-term health, and sees training as something that supports her life instead of something she has to endure.
This is not just a programme she followed. It is a standard she has built into her life.
“At the end of 2024, I truly thought that I was dying. I was extremely tired, and everything in my body ached, especially my feet and legs. It felt like someone was sitting on my chest, and my energy levels were zero. In a last-ditch attempt, I decided to try HPC. To be honest, I was not hopeful because I had tried it all and nothing worked. Apart from the fact that I have always hated exercise.
I can tell you HPC, and more specifically Anton Esterhuizen, changed my life. I don’t think that I have ever felt this good in my own body. I am healthier than I have probably ever been, I feel strong, I have energy, and all my aches and pains are gone. I have lost 10 kg’s since starting, but more importantly, I feel like I have many, many more years left in me.
Who would have guessed that, of all people, I would love exercise? I truly look forward to each session. This is just the beginning — can’t wait for the rest of the journey.”
Start with an assessment
Anita’s progress did not start with random training.
It started with understanding her body properly.
If you are tired of guessing, pushing harder without progress, or living with pain that keeps affecting your life, the first step is not another generic programme.
The first step is an expert assessment consultation.
